He has been preparing officers for promotional examinations for over ten years, with a record unmatched in Massachusetts. In addition, his specialized legal training programs have been well received throughout Massachusetts. Among the many topics addressed: criminal law, narcotics offenses, domestic violence, stop & frisk, searches with and without warrants, interrogations and identifications, court testimony and report writing, problem solving and mediation, sexual assault investigation, and juvenile law and procedure. Among the many agencies served, Scheft has taught courses for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Massachusetts State Police, Boston Police, Massachusetts Juvenile Police Officers Association, and Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council. Aside from legal preparation, John Scheft performs consulting services for police agencies concerning management and human relations. Among numerous conferences that he has appeared at, Scheft spoke on ethics and policing at the Harvard University symposium on "Police, Lawyers and the Truth." He has also been a presenter at the New England Community Police Partnership's annual conference, talking on the subject of stress and community policing. Scheft frequently teams up with other professionals from the mental health field in his seminars on stress, communication and leadership in policing. Examples of audiences that have participated in these types of trainings are the DEA Advanced Narcotics School in New England and the Lowell Massachusetts Police Academy. From 1993 to 1995, Scheft also served as the Director of the Attorney General's Elderly Protection Project, which provided multi-disciplinary training to police officers at the recruit, in-service and advanced levels on community policing issues affecting the elderly. Funded through a national grant program, the Project received a 1994 award from the U.S. Department of Justice for its innovative approach to police training. Prior to serving with the Attorney General, Scheft ran his own law practice, with an emphasis on criminal defense work. Before that experience, he served as an Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, where he became a specialist in child abuse and hard core juvenile offender cases. John Scheft graduated with an honors degree in government from Harvard University in 1981 and received his law degree from Northeastern University School of Law in 1986. John lives in Arlington with his wife and two children. |
